Setting up the audience category in stream manager

The audience category in stream manager allows program admins to target content based on user profile data, such as location or department. After you select an audience category, the audiences within that category can be grouped for more efficient content featuring.

Stream manager supports only one audience category at a time. If you need to change the category (for example, from "User Country" to "Offices"), all existing featured content connected to the current category are deleted.

Permissions

Anyone with the following user roles can set up and manage the audience category:

  • Campaign manager
  • Volunteer manager
  • Content manager
  • Dashboard manager
  • Missions manager

Note: Because many admins may have access to stream manager through ambassador-type roles, it’s important to coordinate any changes to the audience category.

Changing the category affects the entire program and removes all existing streams. Admins receive a warning, but we recommend discussing changes with your program team before proceeding.

Understanding the audience category

Audience category is chosen from the user profile data set up for a program in the demographic file or worker data. You can only select profile data that every user has a value for.

When an admin selects the audience category, values related to that user profile field can be chosen as audiences.

Example scenario

  • A program has a custom classification called User Country with 30 different country options.
  • Since all users are classified within one of these 30 countries, User Country appears as an audience category.
  • Selecting this category allows admins to target content by country.

Setting up the audience category

If no audience category has been set up, admins will see Configure Audiences next to the stream name.

To set up the audience category:

  1. Navigate to Stream Manager.
  2. Select Configure Audiences (this opens the audience settings page).
  3. Choose an audience category from the dropdown (this is based on profile fields set up in your program). These fields, such as location or department, define how users are grouped for targeted content.this pulls from the program’s custom classifications).
Note: When stream manager is active, the custom classification selected as your audience category can only be edited in the stream manager.
  4. Add, delete, or edit the different audience groups within the selected audience category as needed.
  5. Select Save to apply the category.

Once saved, you can target content for the audiences and audience groups within the category, based on a shared profile value, such as location or department.

Changing and editing the audience category

You can change or edit the audience category at any time by selecting Configure Audiences under the Audience dropdown menu.

Note: Stream manager supports only one audience category at a time. When you change the category (for example, from "User Country" to "Offices"), all existing featured content and streams connected to the current category are deleted.

Admins are shown a confirmation warning before saving, including how many streams will be removed. Once saved, the new category applies and you must build new streams and manually re-add content.

This action cannot be undone, and any previously curated content—especially manually added URLs—will be permanently lost from the stream.

Also note that admins cannot manually add audiences to a category. Audiences are automatically populated based on the selected profile field (such as department or region) and must include all users in the program.

Be sure to select a category that aligns with your long-term content strategy, and communicate any planned changes with your admin team.

If you don’t see any custom classifications in the Audience Category dropdown, it likely means that none of your user profile fields include all program users.

If a specific classification is missing, it may be because that particular profile field is incomplete.
