Helping your nonprofit partners register on the Benevity Causes Portal

Use the Cause Report to check your nonprofit partners' onboarding progress, then reach out with the right message when registration is incomplete. Partners can only receive your program's donations, grants, and volunteer support once they register on the Benevity Causes Portal. Before you draft outreach, confirm how nonprofit registration works end to end, and find the right resource for your nonprofit partner at each stage.

Permissions

Anyone with the Reports Manager user role can run the Cause Report and check a nonprofit's status.

Understanding nonprofit registration statuses

To check onboarding progress, open Benevity Reporting from Manage, run the Cause Report, and review Claimed Status, Verified Status, and Payment Status.

What you see in the Cause Report What it means What to do
Claimed Status shows the profile is unclaimed The nonprofit has not registered on the Benevity Causes Portal. The profile still shows basic information from a government list. Follow the outreach steps below and use the email template for nonprofits with an unclaimed profile
Claimed Status shows claimed, but Verified Status is not complete The nonprofit started registration (claimed the profile) but has not finished validation. Follow the outreach steps below and use the email template for nonprofits who started but haven't finished registering
Payment Status is not EFT (for example, check) Registration and validation may be done, but banking details are not set up for Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). Help the nonprofit set up electronic funds transfer
The nonprofit's profile is inactive The nonprofit's profile is no longer active. Check why the nonprofit became inactive
Claimed Status, Verified Status, and Payment Status show the nonprofit is fully onboarded (claimed, verified, and set up for EFT) The nonprofit is registered, validated, and ready to receive funds electronically. Share engagement resources for registered partners

Inviting nonprofit partners to register

Nonprofits sometimes need a nudge to start or finish registering. A direct message from you often works better than a generic Benevity reminder, because they already work with your company.

Follow these steps when Claimed Status shows the profile is unclaimed, or when the profile is claimed but Verified Status is not complete:

  1. Confirm the nonprofit's Cause Report fields before you reach out, so your message matches where they stand.
  2. Reach out to the nonprofit directly. Use the email templates below as a starting point, and send the message from your own account.
  3. Share a registration resource. Send the printable registration guide (also available in German, French, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese), or the Causes Help step-by-step registration guide.

Understanding registration timelines

Initial application reviews typically happen within 24–72 hours, as described in Nonprofit registration. Benevity's in-house validation team then reviews the submission. To help avoid delays, encourage the nonprofit to submit complete documentation and respond promptly to any follow-up requests.

When someone else already registered the profile

If another contact at the nonprofit still works there, ask them to add the new person as a subuser. Do not share login credentials.

If the owner has left or cannot be reached, the nonprofit can often select Apply to Register on the registration form. If they get the message “This account is actively managed. Please contact the current owner or support.” (the owner signed in within the last 90 days), they should contact the owner or contact support instead. Follow the full process for accessing a registered account.

When registration shows a save error

If the nonprofit sees “An error has occurred while saving your progress” (or “while updating your location”), tell them to contact support right away. Do not try to work around it.

When a nonprofit's country is not listed on the registration form

If a country does not appear on the Benevity Causes Portal registration form, Benevity likely cannot disburse funds to that country.

Using email templates for registration outreach

Use these templates to reach out to a nonprofit, depending on their Cause Report fields. Adjust the bracketed fields to fit your voice and relationship with the nonprofit.
