Nonprofits start the registration process by creating an account. Each step in the process ensures accuracy, security, and compliance.
At Benevity, we prioritize trust, transparency, and security in our collaboration with nonprofits. That’s why we’ve implemented a rigorous registration and validation process to confirm the identity of every individual creating an account or accessing nonprofit information through the Benevity Causes Portal. The process ensures that only authorized nonprofit administrators can view and manage their organization’s details, safeguarding the integrity of our platform and the nonprofits we serve.
Step 1 - Identify the operating country
Nonprofits begin the registration process by selecting their country of operation. Changing the country at a later stage will reset the entire application, as the required information varies by region.
Step 2 - Existing registration check
To maintain accurate records and prevent duplicate profiles, nonprofits search for their organization by name or government ID. This step ensures the organization is not already listed on the Benevity Causes Portal. If an existing registration is found, they'll need to contact the owner or apply for ownership. What to do if a nonprofit is already registered.
Step 3 - Registrant contact details and verification documentation
To register on behalf of a nonprofit organization, the primary registrant must have the authority to act as its representative and be able to provide the following documentation during the registration process:
-
Letter of Authorization
A signed letter from a senior official, such as a signing officer, executive, or board member, confirming the registrant’s authority to manage the account. -
Banking Information
A copy of a recent bank statement for the nonprofit organization or a VOID cheque that includes the organization’s name and address.
The primary contact should also include an alternative contact to ensure the organization’s account can always be accessed if needed.
Step 4 - Nonprofit documentation
Documentation must be submitted for the organization, depending on the country of operation. Documents include:
- The official, legally recognized name of the organization.
- The type of organization (e.g., charity, nonprofit).
- The governing regulatory body in their country.
- A government-issued registration number.
- A description of the organization’s primary focus area.
Country-specific requirements ensure alignment with local regulations and establish a strong foundation for the nonprofit's profile and eligibility.
Step 5 - Benevity reviews the application
After completing the registration steps, Benevity’s team will evaluate the nonprofit and registrant's eligibility to participate in the Benevity Causes Portal. We review the nonprofit’s application and apply our secure vetting and verification procedures. Review times vary based on region, current queue volume, and whether the nonprofit’s submission is complete. Nonprofits may be asked for additional documentation or clarification, and the review can’t be completed until they respond. Nonprofits can avoid delays by submitting complete documentation and replying promptly to any follow-up requests.
Registered nonprofits must also meet your program eligibility rules to connect with your corporate giving programs and engage effectively with supporters.
