Creating and managing challenge series

Challenge series group individual challenges into structured, guided paths for employees. By combining multiple challenges around a common theme, such as onboarding, Black History Month, or Earth Month, you can drive sustained participation and reward employees for completing an entire curriculum.

Permissions

Anyone with the Challenge Manager user role can create and manage challenge series.

Creating a new series

To create a challenge series:

  1. Go to Manage > Content > Manage Challenges > My Series, then select Create series.
  2. Complete the series details:
    • Name, short tagline, and description
    • Start and end dates
    • Category
    • Cover image and alt text
    • Require sequence: Turn on to lock each challenge until the participant completes the previous one, or leave off to allow any order
  3. Add challenges using the challenge picker. Search or filter by category, duration, or type, then choose one or more existing challenges. If Require sequence is on, drag challenges into your preferred order.
  4. (Optional) Enter Completion bonus points to reward employees who finish every challenge in the series.
  5. Select Next: Review to verify all details, then select Publish to make the series live, or Save as draft to continue editing before publishing.

If you published, the series is now live. Employees can view it immediately but cannot join until the start date.

Assigning series from the Benevity Catalog

To assign a series from the global catalog:

  1. Go to Manage > Content > Manage Challenges > Catalog.
  2. Locate the desired series from the global Benevity Challenges Catalog.
  3. Select Assign to Program.
  4. Customize the series details and dates to fit your organization's program.
  5. Select Publish.

The series is now assigned to your program and visible to employees.

Editing a series

To update an existing series:

  1. Go to Manage > Content > Manage Challenges > My Series.
  2. Find the series you want to update, then select Edit.
  3. Make your changes using the same form as when creating a series.
  4. Select Next: Review, then select Publish to apply your changes, or Save as draft to continue editing later.

Your changes are applied immediately to the live series.

Understanding date rules and errors

The start and end dates determine when employees can join a series. If a series is published on August 15 with a start date of September 1, employees can view the series details immediately but cannot select Join series until September 1.

Each challenge has a set duration (Instant, 1, 3, 5, 7, 14, or 30 days). If the total time required to complete all sequenced challenges exceeds the window between the series start and end dates, a non-blocking error message displays during creation to alert you.

If Require sequence is on and a challenge you have added is already part of another sequenced series, a conflict warning appears beside the challenge list. To resolve the warning, remove the conflicting challenge or turn off Require sequence before publishing.

Managing series-exclusive challenges

When you create an individual challenge, you can mark it as Series Exclusive.

Series-exclusive challenges do not appear on the general Browse Challenges page. Employees can only discover, join, and complete these challenges within the assigned series.
