Custom categories let you create organizational labels for challenges that reflect your company's unique program pillars. Alongside the standard categories always available in Challenges, custom categories give your people a more relevant way to discover and filter content on the Browse Challenges page.
Permissions
Anyone with the Challenges Admin user role can create, rename, and delete custom categories.
Understanding custom categories
Challenges includes four standard categories that are always available and cannot be removed: Wellbeing, Sustainability, Diversity and Inclusion, and Other. Custom categories supplement these defaults, giving you the flexibility to align challenge content with your organization's specific goals and terminology.
Custom categories are specific to your organization. For example, you might create a Mental Health category to group challenges that support employee wellbeing initiatives beyond the standard Wellbeing category. Once created, a custom category is immediately available when creating or editing a challenge and appears alongside the standard categories in the Categories dropdown.
Note: Custom categories currently appear as Other in challenge reports. An update to reflect the specific custom category name in reporting is planned for a future release.
Creating a custom category
- Select Manage in the top right corner.
- Select Content > Challenges Settings.
- Under Manage Custom Categories, select Create Custom Category.
- Enter a unique label. Labels must be 30 characters or less.
- Select Save.
The new category is immediately available for selection when creating or editing challenges.
Applying a custom category to a challenge
The Categories dropdown is available when creating a new challenge and when editing an existing one. To apply a custom category to an existing challenge:
- In My Catalog, find the challenge and select Edit from the Actions three-dot menu.
- Select the Categories dropdown.
- Select your custom category from the list. Standard categories and any custom categories your organization has created are all available here.
- Select Save.
When creating a new challenge, the Categories dropdown appears in the challenge creation form. Select your category there before saving.
Your employees can use this category to filter results on the Browse Challenges page.
Renaming a custom category
You can rename a custom category at any time without affecting the challenges currently assigned to it.
- Select Manage in the top right corner.
- Select Content > Challenges Settings.
- Under Manage Custom Categories, select the three-dot menu next to the category you want to rename.
- Select Rename.
- Update the label. Labels must be 30 characters or less.
- Select Save.
The updated label is applied immediately across all challenges that use this category.
Deleting a custom category
You can delete a custom category when it's no longer needed for your program.
- Select Manage in the top right corner.
- Select Content > Challenges Settings.
- Under Manage Custom Categories, select the three-dot menu next to the category you want to remove.
- Select Delete.
- Review the confirmation prompt. If the category is assigned to any challenges, those challenges will be archived and moved to the Other category. This applies to all challenge states, including drafts and scheduled challenges. You can edit an archived challenge and republish or reschedule it afterwards.

The custom category is removed from the Manage Custom Categories table and is no longer available for selection in the Categories dropdown.
