Understanding affinity and interest groups

Affinity group

An affinity group is an employee-led network that serves to foster inclusion and belonging in the workplace by offering personal and professional support as well as advocating and giving a collective voice to the groups' needs within the larger organization.Employees who lead or participate in an affinity group often share a common demographic characteristic or experience that is under-represented in the larger organization.

An affinity group may also be called an employee resource group (ERG), a business resource group (BRG), a diversity network, or anything else that an organization may have chosen to name them!

Interest group

An interest group is also an employee-led network, however, the focus of the group is on common interests or passions. An example could be a book or run club.

Interest groups may not be part of your organization’s program.
