Verifying nonprofit users and ongoing monitoring

To maintain a high standard of security and trust, Benevity leverages integrated fraud prevention tools—such as ThreatMetrix—to screen nonprofit users both at the time of registration and during key actions within the Causes Portal. If a user is identified as higher risk at any stage, additional verification measures are triggered.

Through our partnership with ThreatMetrix, Benevity continuously monitors for unusual login behavior and flags situations where additional verification may be required. This layered, multi-stage approach to risk assessment helps protect donor funds, secure sensitive data, and uphold the integrity of nonprofit profiles on our platform. By collecting and analyzing a broader set of behavioral and digital identity data over time, we’re able to make smarter, more accurate decisions when evaluating potential threats or determining access permissions.

When a nonprofit registers in the Causes Portal or performs a sensitive action, the cause owner is screened. If ThreatMetrix flags potentially fraudulent activity—such as multiple claimed profiles, inappropriate authority claims, associations with Benevity client organizations, or other unusual behaviors—Benevity will take additional steps to confirm that the user is an authorized representative. In cases requiring further verification, the cause owner must submit documentation through the Causes Portal to prove their affiliation.

If more information is needed, Benevity will request clarification to complete the process, all in an attempt to ensure a secure, trusted environment for giving, volunteering, and granting across the Benevity ecosystem.
