To ensure trust, compliance, and the proper use of donation funds, Benevity validates that all organizations listed in the Causes Portal are legitimate nonprofits. This process confirms their eligibility to appear on the platform and to receive donations through your giving programs.
How nonprofits are validated
Benevity works with official sources and its in-house vetting experts to validate nonprofits in countries around the world. Depending on where an organization is based, validation may occur through:
- Government registry data in regions where Benevity has access to official databases (such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and Aotearoa/New Zealand).
- Internal validation processes for organizations not listed in public registries but that provide supporting documentation.
- Benevity’s in-house validation services for nonprofits in countries outside of Benevity’s core registry regions.
Once validated, an organization must also meet Benevity’s platform-wide eligibility standards and any additional requirements set by your program.
Types of eligible organizations
Eligible nonprofits include a broad range of charitable entities and community organizations, such as:
- Registered charities and public foundations
- Schools and educational institutions
- Government departments and First Nations communities
- Religious organizations and community groups
- Sports clubs, social enterprises, and similar entities recognized under local nonprofit classifications
Organizations may be registered formally with their country’s charity regulators, or validated through trusted documentation where registry data is unavailable.
Global reach
For countries not covered by direct government registry access, Benevity’s in-house vetting experts use official records to confirm nonprofit legitimacy in over 230 countries and territories.
Benevity syncs regularly with official sources and internal validation data to ensure the Causes Portal reflects accurate and up-to-date information. If a nonprofit’s status changes, the profile is updated accordingly to prevent ineligible donations.
